Building a survey

Text: short answer, long answer, email, phone, link, number and address. Choice: multiple choice, checkboxes, dropdown, picture choice and ranking. Scales: rating, NPS, slider, yes/no and matrix. Other: date, time, file upload and signature.

All of them are on the free plan. File uploads are capped at 10 MB per file on free and 5 GB per file on Pulseware Pro.

Some blocks exist because a purpose-built one beats a generic one: the NPS question type scores itself, the address block validates line by line, and yes/no is one tap on a phone rather than a dropdown.

Split a long survey with page breaks. Each page gets its own screen and its own place in the progress bar.

The conversational layout shows one question at a time, whatever your page structure. Turn it on in the Design tab.

Endings are screens people land on when they finish. You can have several and send different people to different ones — a pass and a fail ending on a quiz, or a "book a call" ending for anyone who picked "yes". Endings can also redirect to a URL.

The Design tab sets colours, fonts, background, your logo and a cover image. That is all free.

Two things are on Pro: custom CSS, for when the theme editor is not enough, and the link preview — the title, description and image people see when your link is pasted into Slack, LinkedIn or a message. Both are listed on the pricing page.

• Required answers. Only mark a question required if you genuinely cannot use the response without it.
• Save and continue later. Worth it for anything over about ten questions.
• Close date or response limit. Set it now rather than remembering later.
• Duplicate prevention. Stops the same person answering twice.
• Anonymous responses. Changes what is stored — see anonymous mode.

Version history keeps 7 days of edits on free, 30 days on Pro and 90 days on Pulseware Business, so a bad edit is never permanent.

The quickest first draft is somebody else's finished one. Browse every form and survey template, or jump to a common shape: a contact form template, a lead generation form template, a customer feedback survey, an employee pulse survey, or a scored quiz.
