Word clouds work best as an opening question.
They surface themes in seconds, but they are not a substitute for a real survey. Six places they shine.
-
Conference opener
"In one word, describe today's biggest challenge." Build the cloud during the keynote intro.
-
Team retrospectives
"One word for how this sprint felt." Anonymous, fast, surfaces issues before the discussion frames them.
-
Brand perception checks
"Pick three words that describe our product." Pair with a structured survey to dig into the strongest themes.
-
Classroom warm-ups
"In one word, what does democracy mean to you?" The cloud sparks the discussion before the lecture starts.
-
Workshop icebreakers
"One word that describes your week." Low-stakes, anonymous, gets the room talking without forcing introductions.
-
Post-launch reactions
"First word that comes to mind about the new release." Tracks sentiment over time when run regularly.
How Pulseware aggregates words.
- 1. Lowercase + punctuation strip. "Great" and "great!" collapse into the same word. Predictable counts, no hidden duplicates.
- 2. Optional stop-word filter. Drop common words ("the", "and", "a") so the cloud highlights meaningful tokens. Disable for languages or use cases where stop-words matter.
- 3. Per-voter word cap. Set
maxWordsPerResponsefrom 1 to 5. Higher caps work well for free-association exercises. - 4. Live moderation. Click any word in the dashboard to hide it from the public cloud — typos, profanity, off-topic. The original answer stays in the CSV.
- 5. CSV export of raw answers. Every submitted word is exported with timestamps and optional UTM tags so you can do your own analysis.
