Word clouds work best as an opening question.

They surface themes in seconds, but they are not a substitute for a real survey. Six places they shine.

How Pulseware aggregates words.

  • 1.
Lowercase + punctuation strip. "Great" and "great!" collapse into the same word. Predictable counts, no hidden duplicates.
  • 2.
Optional stop-word filter. Drop common words ("the", "and", "a") so the cloud highlights meaningful tokens. Disable for languages or use cases where stop-words matter.
  • 3.
Per-voter word cap. Set maxWordsPerResponse from 1 to 5. Higher caps work well for free-association exercises.
  • 4.
Live moderation. Click any word in the dashboard to hide it from the public cloud — typos, profanity, off-topic. The original answer stays in the CSV.
  • 5.
CSV export of raw answers. Every submitted word is exported with timestamps and optional UTM tags so you can do your own analysis.

Common questions

Specifically about Pulseware word-cloud polls — aggregation, moderation, export.

How does the word cloud aggregate answers?
Pulseware lowercases each submitted word, strips punctuation, optionally collapses common stop-words ("the", "and", "a"), and groups by frequency. The size of each word in the cloud is proportional to its count. Raw answers are kept in CSV export so you can apply your own analysis.
How many words can one voter submit?
You choose — the word-cloud question type has a `maxWordsPerResponse` setting that defaults to one. Set it to 3 for "give me three words that describe this" prompts, or higher for free-association exercises.
Can I moderate the cloud?
Yes. The dashboard shows incoming words in real time; click any word to hide it from the public cloud (typos, profanity, off-topic). The original response stays in the CSV; only the public render hides it.
Will the cloud update live?
On async polls, yes — the public results page subscribes to a realtime channel and re-renders as words arrive. The animated, presenter-driven word cloud (smooth physics animation, speaker control) ships in P1 alongside live polling.
Is the word cloud good for sentiment analysis?
Reasonable for a rough read; not a replacement for a real NPS or CSAT survey. Use the word cloud to surface themes, then write a follow-up survey with structured questions. The two formats complement each other.
Can I export the raw words?
Yes, one click to CSV (and Excel). Every response is included, with timestamp and optional UTM tags, so you can pivot or analyse the data in your tool of choice.
